"OUR ANCESTORS" story continues with ... "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Christopher Columbus was an Italian who sailed to discover and conquer lands for Spain. In the early 1500's, Spain and Portugal gave land grants to sailors and soldiers to the "new land." They came to seek gold and fortune. By 1565, St. Augustine (Florida) to Santa Fe (New Mexico) was settled by Spaniards. They brought cattle, horses, blacksmithing, carpentry and masonry skills. Missions were build throughout the Southwest. Our block this month is the SPANISH SHIP. Use scant 1/4" piecing.

Spanish Ship
1. Cut from Sky fabric: three 4" squares, one 3 1/2" square, and two strips 3 1/2" x 9 1/2"
Cut from Sail fabric: three 4" squares Cut from Ship fabric: one rectangle 12 1/2" x 3 1/2"
Cut from Water fabric: two 3 1/2" squares
2. Construct the center sail section. Use the 4" squares of sail and sky fabric to make triangle squares. Place a sail and sky with right sides together and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the sail fabric. Stitch a SCANT 1/4" on each side of the diagonal line. Cut on drawn line and press toward sail fabric. Square five of these units into 3 1/2" squares (there will be one extra). Follow diagram to assemble; piece should measure 6 1/2" x 9 1/2".
3. To make ship, use the snowball technique. Place a water fabric square with right sides together on each end of ship. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the water fabric. outside edge toward center bottom edge. Stitch ON drawn line. Press toward water, trim underneath.
- Attach ship and water section to upper secion and press toward ship
- Block will measure 12 1/3" unfinished.
